Description
While radicalization is not a new phenomenon, its trends, methods, and patterns continue to evolve, requiring adaptive responses. Home-grown lone actors and returning foreign terrorist fighters present unique security challenges, complicating prevention efforts. Internet platforms, including social media, are increasingly exploited by violent extremists, terrorist groups, and their sympathizers, creating new opportunities for mobilization, recruitment, and communication. In response, the European Commission has introduced a series of voluntary and legislative measures aimed at addressing these challenges, with particular emphasis on protecting children and youth. This discussion with Friederike Wegener, from the Unit of Prevention of Radicalisation at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, emphasized the importance of robust strategies and international cooperation to protect children from radicalization while safeguarding their rights in the digital age.
